Traffic heading toward Washington from Maryland’s Eastern Shore appeared to be zipping along late Monday night, but a few hours earlier backups extended to as much as eight miles, according to official information.

The Maryland state highway administration reported an eight mile westbound delay at the Chesapeake Bay bridge about 7:30 p.m. A couple of hours later, backups of about 5 miles still remained.

By 11 p.m., however, the highway administration said traffic was moving at around 50 mph.
