A full listing of the hazards Americans have faced in gaining access to the ballot box may have to include recent events near an early-voting site in the District.
On Thursday night, a security guard was robbed of his pistol as he left the public library branch in the 3900 block of Benning Road NE. Just after the 9 p.m. closing time, someone came from behind, put an object to his head and said it was a gun. Early voting started at the library on Friday.
On Friday, a man suffered minor injuries when he was shot about 1 p.m. a few dozen yards from the voting site. A library spokesman said voting was not interrupted.
Although each incident was unsettling, nothing suggested that either was vote-related. However, it appeared that few other early vote sites in the region could report a similar history.
