The Arlington County school board on Friday approved a measure to consider appointing an interim member to fill one of two recent vacancies.

The school board will hold a public hearing on Sept. 4 to discuss the possible appointment to the five-member board. Currently, the board has only three elected members after two members resigned in close succession.

The interim appointment will “help to ensure fair and responsive leadership to represent the citizens of Arlington County and to make certain that decisions made during this period of transition reflect support by at least three members of the five-member body,” the administration said in a statement.

In July, board member Noah Simon announced he was resigning to spend more time with his children after his wife, Kedron Veliz Simon, died from intestinal cancer.

Last week, board member Sally Baird announced she was resigning effective Friday, citing “commitments in both my personal and professional life.” No appointment will be made to fill her seat because the scheduled end of her term is within 60 days of the November 2014 general election.

Following the Sept. 4 hearing, the board will meet on Sept. 12 consider the appointment for Simon’s seat. Among the those under consideration is Nancy Van Doren, who is the only candidate on the ballot in the Nov. 4 special election for the seat.

The interim member will hold the seat until the new member elected on Nov. 4 takes office.
