Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) will host a community forum Tuesday night at the South Bowie Branch Library to discuss the new governance structure of the school system.
The forum will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Baker initially sought to completely take over the school system. Under his plan, he would have had control of the system’s $1.7 billion budget and the power to hire the school superintendent and make him or her a member of his executive Cabinet.
The General Assembly approved an amended version of the plan.
Under the new law, which takes effect June 1, Baker will select the new schools chief, appoint three new members to the school board and name the board chair and vice chair.
Baker has been meeting with various stakeholders, including board members, business leaders, union leaders and school employees, since the General Assembly approved the legislation.
Tuesday’s forum will be the first time he will host a meeting to formally address residents about the changes.
