Big Ten alumni in the D.C. area

The 12 schools of the Big Ten Conference have a large alumni base nationwide, and many of the colleges boast significant numbers of alumni in the Washington area. All told, Big 10 schools report having more than 91,000 alumni in the region. Alumni often gather for football and basketball game watches, crowds that likely would be in the market for game tickets at Maryland. The following are the number of graduates from each school in the Washington area, as reported by school and alumni officials:

Illinois: 8,000

Indiana: 10,750

Iowa: 5,477

Michigan: 15,000

Michigan State: 10,500

Minnesota: 4,000

Nebraska: 1,300

Northwestern: 5,000

Ohio State: 9,400

Penn State: 12,000

Purdue: 1,678

Wisconsin: 8,490

Northwestern University officials could not provide alumni estimates Monday.

Total: 91,595
