Broad Run High School Twitter-bombs RGIII
By Susan Svrluga,
Broad Run High School students unleashed a flurry of tweets to Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III on Thursday, sending photos of themselves, their teachers and their cafeteria workers “Griffining” around their Ashburn campus and asking a favor: They want him to speak at their commencement this spring.
Two years ago, their graduation speaker was “some economist,” said assistant principal Jennifer Cavanaugh, who had the idea with a business teacher to try to lure someone a little more exciting to the 1,800-student school a few miles from the Redskins’ headquarters.
Teachers praised Griffin’s character and commitment to academics, as well as his athletic ability. And students took photos in the football stands, on top of lockers and in front of “Spartans caught GRIFFIN fever! Won’t you B R graduation speaker?” banners.
Their pleas range from the courtly (“broad run would be most grateful if you spoke at our graduation,”) to affectionate (“whuddup dawg pce & blessins love your spartan valentines,”) to spare (“come to our graduation my dude.”)
A Redskins spokesman did not immediately respond to questions, nor did Griffin instantly tweet back to the students. But who knows? Last fall, when students asked him to come to a football game raising money for breast cancer — in the middle of the Redskins’ season, which is kinda busy — he showed up in the second quarter.
“He came with no entourage, just showed up with his fiancee, signed countless autographs, took lots of pictures,” Cavanaugh said. “He was just so gracious. We were all really impressed with him as a person.”
