Education digest: Schools honored for fighting obesity; Fairfax County hires counsel

Schools honored for obesity efforts

At Arrowhead Elementary School, teachers and staff members drink vegetable and fruit smoothies each day.

The students at Clinton Grove Elementary play basketball, jump rope and use Hula-Hoops before and after school.

And at Springhill Lake Elementary, there are weekly cooking and gardening classes.

The Prince George’s schools were acknowledged by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation last week for the work they do to fight childhood obesity. They were among 267 schools across the country, including 17 others from Prince George’s, that were honored.

Howell Wechsler, chief executive officer of the Alliance, said in a statement that “their successful efforts to get students and staff eating better and moving more prove that schools are great environments to promote both health and academics.”

Fairfax hires new division counsel

The Fairfax County school division has hired a new division counsel. John Foster comes to the school system from Falls Church, where he has served since 2008 as the city’s attorney. Foster acted as legal adviser to the city council and school board.

Foster earlier served eight years as an assistant attorney specializing in land use and rezoning laws with the Fairfax County Attorney’s Office.

Foster will represent Fairfax County schools in cases involving staff and students, and provide legal advice on school board matters.

Foster graduated from the University of Virginia law school and received a bachelor’s degree from U-Va. in history and foreign affairs.
