Fairfax budget meetings ahead this week

Fairfax County School Board members will host two budget meetings this week to discuss strategies for addressing the upcoming decision by the Board of Supervisors to set the tax rate limits for next year.

School board member Daniel G. Storck (Mount Vernon) said the members of the school board will lead a community meeting to discuss budget strategy at 7 p.m. Thursday at Luther Jackson Middle School. Storck said that the meeting would be open to everyone in the community, unlike a meeting held last week.

On Saturday, school board member Pat Hynes and supervisor Catherine M. Hudgins (D), who both represent the Hunter Mill district, will hold a meeting to discuss the budget at the Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor’s Center. Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova (D) and County Executive Edward L. Long Jr. will attend the meeting to provide details about the proposed budget.

More than half of the county’s budget goes to the school system, which relies on local tax dollars for 75 percent of its revenue. On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors will announce the limits to next year’s tax rate.

“There is a significant gap between the school system’s request and the County Executive’s proposal,” Hynes wrote in an e-mail announcing the event. “This Saturday may be your only chance to hear and be heard before the tax rate is irreversibly set.”

The meeting will begin at 8 a.m., with coffee and donuts. The discussion on the budget will begin at 10 a.m.
