A former deputy school superintendent in Howard County has been named the interim chief financial officer for Prince George’s County School System.

Ray Brown was welcomed by Schools Chief Kevin M. Maxwell at Thursday night’s board meeting.

Brown, who retired from Howard County in 2013 and once served as the county schools’ chief operating officer, replaces Colby White who resigned last month after the state said he and his wife committed insurance fraud.

“Mr. Brown brings extensive budget and financial experience, serving in roles in Howard County Public Schools and [Maryland State Department of Education],” Maxwell said. “I’m grateful to have him on board.”

Brown becomes the third CFO since Maxwell became the schools chief last year.

When Maxwell came on board, Thomas E. Sheeran was serving as the acting CFO. White was the district’s budget director when Maxwell tapped him in July to replace Sheeran.

As chief financial officer, Brown will be responsible for crafting the school district’s 2016 budget and a staff of 175 employees. His office includes payroll, purchasing and workers’ compensation.

The school system is currently undergoing an external audit to ensure that there were no improprieties over school funds during White’s short tenure as CFO.

White quit after school system officials learned that the state fined him and his wife for insurance fraud. His wife, Keisha White, also resigned. She worked for the school system as an internal auditor.

The Maryland Insurance Administration ordered the Whites in August pay $6,000 for filing a false insurance claim for a lost wedding ring.
