Frederick County schools granted state waiver for two snow days

Maryland education leaders approved a two-day waiver of instructional days lost to snow for Frederick County, school officials said Tuesday.

The announcement came a day after Montgomery County learned its request for a five-day state waiver was rejected. Montgomery, which had 10 snow days, is reassessing and will soon come up with a new plan, officials said.

Frederick County closed its schools 12 days due to inclement weather and had only five emergency closures built into its school calendar.

To make up for the missed time, Frederick decided to hold classes on a teacher professional day in March, as well as on Easter Monday and three other days of its spring break in April.

With those adjustments and the waiver, the last day of school is slated for June 11.

School officials sought a two-day waiver request , believing students needed to recoup the rest of the lost instructional time, said Frederick schools spokeswoman Dian Nelson.
