A public meeting is scheduled for Dec. 16 to discuss the cemetery discovered on the site of the 12th high school in Prince William County, which is under construction, and how the remains and artifacts should be re-interred.
School officials will report archaeological findings about the site, and community members are invited to ask questions about the discovery and make recommendations.
The cemetery, dating back 150 or more years, was uncovered in November as land was being cleared for the sports complex that will be part of the new high school, which is scheduled for completion in 2016.
Excavation and recovery was completed on Nov. 21. School officials said that old grave sites have been uncovered during the construction of other schools, including Hylton and Potomac high schools, Graham Park Middle School, and Dumfries Elementary School. In each case, officials said they sought to keep them intact.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Board Meeting Room of the Edward Kelly Leadership Center, 14715 Bristow Road, in Manassas.
