The Prince George’s County Board of Education this week recognized a parent, who spends four days a week volunteering at her local school, and several students, teachers, and schools for their work, during an awards ceremony at Laurel High School.
Cecilia Quinonez, a parent volunteer at Tulip Grove Elementary School, was honored for receiving the “Golden Apple” award from Maryland State Comptroller Peter Franchot earlier this year for her work in Prince George’s County. This is the first school year Franchot has given an award to volunteers in various jurisdictions across the state.
“Countless numbers of men, women and organizations donate their time and resources to volunteer at public schools throughout the state. All without pay and, sometimes, without the proper recognition they deserve,” Franchot said in a statement announcing the award.
William Clay, a school counselor at Charles Carroll Middle School, was celebrated for his selection as the National 2012 Marcus Foster Distinguished Educator award by the National Alliance of Black School Educators, a nonprofit that aims to improve academic achievement among black students. One NABSE official said he could not recall another school counselor receiving the educator award in the last 17 years.
Glenarden Woods, Rockledge and Heather Hills elementary schools and Accokeek Academy were honored for receiving Maryland Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education School awards, and Adelphi and Lewisdale elementary schools were acknowledged for the 2013 Title I Superlative Highest Performing Reward.
Some of the other awards included the National Hispanic Scholars, which went to Christian O’Brian, Daniel Chavez and Manuel Ayala-Sapelli, all of Eleanor Roosevelt High School; the Teacher of the Month, Jewel Parks, a teacher at Rose Valley Elementary School, and national board certifications for 27 teachers .
Also, 11 students were recognized for receiving the Posse Foundation Scholarship, a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to various universities, including Bucknell and Pepperdine.
