Business owners and Prince George’s County Public School leaders joined on the links and for lunch at the Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville Thursday to help raise money for the Prince George’s County public schools.

They were there for the Fourth Annual Golfing for Education, a fundraiser put together by Excellence in Education Foundation for PGCPS.

Earlier this year, the foundation gave $140,000 in scholarships to 50 high school graduates.

R. Owen Johnson, chairman of the foundation, said the group raised $120,000 on Thursday during its major fundraising event of the year.

County Executive Rushern L Baker III (D) said the foundation’s work is essential to his effort to turn around the school system, which is paramount in his economic development plan.

“It is extremely important to have the business community involved in our schools, not just financially, but emotionally,” Baker said during an interview while dozens of golfers ate broiled salmon, baked chicken, mixed green salad and roasted potatoes. “I’m glad to see the foundation has continued its effort and even gotten better.
