Prince George’s extends deadline for District 9 BOE seat

County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) has extended the deadline for residents of school District 9 to submit applications to serve on the Board of Education.

Applicants have until the close of business Monday to file.

The seat became vacant earlier this month when former school board member Donna Hathaway Beck announced her resignation. Hathaway Beck served more than seven years on the board.

Christian Rhodes, Baker’s education adviser, said the county executive heard from people who said they were unaware of the vacancy or the Sept. 19 deadline.

“The county executive wanted to make sure everybody who wanted to had an opportunity to apply,” Rhodes said.

So far, 20 people have applied for the position, which represents portions of the southern part of the county.

Previously when a board member resigned, a special election was held. But the county executive now has the power to fill open seats under a state law that revamped the school system’s governance structure.
