Woodrow Wilson High School Principal Peter Cahall has resigned, effective immediately, D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson announced in an e-mail to parents on Tuesday.
The school district had already decided not to renew Cahall’s contract next year. But in a letter less than two weeks ago, Cahall said he would finish out the school year.
He wrote that he had been told he was losing his job leading the city’s largest comprehensive public high school because of test scores, a decision he viewed as “arbitrary and capricious” rather than based on facts of the students’ performance.
But he said he would remain committed until June.
“I [am] determined to finish this school year with as much passion, energy and commitment that I have invested in the last six,” Cahall wrote.
Henderson did not discuss the reason for the change in plans in her e-mail. She said that Gregory Bargeman, currently an assistant principal at the 1,700-student high school, will be interim principal for the rest of the year.
Cahall made headlines last spring when he came out as gay at the school’s annual Pride Day activities.
