Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) has selected the chairman of his education commission to replace Verjeana Jacobs (District 5) as chair of the county Board of Education.
Segun Eubanks, the director of teacher quality for the National Education Association, will be sworn in Saturday, according to a statement released late Friday night.
Eubanks “brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the board,” Baker said in a statement announcing the selection.
Eubanks is the first of three appointees selected by Baker to serve on the new reconfigured board. The County Council will also name a board member.
Eubanks’ appointment is the first action taken by Baker since legislation went into effect that imposes dramatic changes on the county public school system. Under the legislation, which goes into effect on Saturday, Baker will select the new schools chief, select three board members and name the board chair and vice chair.
Baker thanked Jacobs for her her service to the board. “She led this board through some very difficult and challenging times,” he said.
