Ex-State Department worker sentenced to 366 days in prison

A former law enforcement officer with the State Department’s Diplomatic Security service who took illegal gifts while stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Jamaica was sentenced Tuesday to 366 days in prison, federal authorities said.

David J. Rainsberger, 33, befriended a well-known Jamaican musician who had been banned from entering the U.S. because of allegations of criminal conduct, according to court records. Rainsberger reinstated the musician’s visa in exchange for two luxury watches, clothes and shoes worth about $3,000, officials from the United States Attorney’s office in the eastern district of Virginia said. Rainsberger was also given backstage access to concerts, free admission to nightclubs, and a birthday party hosted by the musician, according to officials, they said.

Court records did not identify the musician.

Rainsberger also was sentenced for becoming engaged to a Jamaican national, despite already being married, and intentionally withholding this information from a national security questionnaire that requires disclosure of close relationships with foreign nationals, authorities said. According to officials, Rainsberger also repeatedly accessed Department of State visa and passport databases without permission for personal use.

Rainsberger, who was convicted of receiving illegal gratuities and making false statements, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee. In addition to the prison sentence, he also faces one year of supervised release and was ordered to forfeit two Movado watches, prosecutors said.
