Dog in fight quarantined: Welham Green Rd., 900 block, 1:11 p.m. April 6. An animal control officer responding to a report about a groundhog fighting with a dog, found the groundhog dead. The groundhog tested positive for rabies.

Dead raccoon: Lebanon Rd., 5800 block, 8:10 a.m. April 9. An animal control officer collected a dead raccoon, which tested positive for rabies.

Seeking friends: Main St., 9500 block, April 14. Employees of a pet store found a stray guinea pig behind a bag of dog food and took it to the shelter for adoption.

A brief escapade: Fairfax Blvd., 11000 block, April 14. A 5-month-old German shepherd escaped from its owners car while they were at a car dealership. It disappeared into a heavily wooded area. An extensive search was made by animal control and the owners with no results. Later in the day, a driver found the dog at an intersection and took it to the shelter. The animal was treated for minor injuries at an animal hospital and released to its owners.

Cat detained: Poplar St., 4100 block, April 16. A 10-year-old girl was scratched by a stray cat, which was taken to the shelter, where it will be quarantined. If unclaimed, the cat will be placed for adoption.
