Fairfax County news in brief

Reston Community Center
seeks board candidates

The Reston Community Center is seeking candidates for its board of governors.

The nine-member board is responsible for overseeing the center’s operation. All residents of Small District 5 who are 18 older can run in the preference poll for the board. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will appoint the board members after residents of the special tax district, which provides funding for the center, have made their preferences known.

The poll will help fill three positions for three-year terms on the board. Voting will begin in September.

Candidates must complete a statement to have their names placed on the ballot. Forms will be available at the center and at beginning 9 a.m. next Thursday. The registration deadline is 5 p.m. Aug. 15.

Metro Transit Police promoting bike registration online

Metro Transit Police launched a free online registration program for riders who park their bikes at Metro facilities.

“Registering your bike is the best way to help police recover it in the event that it is lost or stolen,” Chief Ron Pavlik said in a news release.

Metro police kicked off the registration effort recently at the Vienna Metro station, giving away locks to cyclists who registered. Riders can visit to sign up. To register, riders will need their bikes’ make, model, serial number, color and frame size.
