Fire raged through a house under renovation in the Bethesda/Chevy Chase area on Friday afternoon, county officials said. No injuries were reported from the blaze, near the corner of 45th and Leland Streets, according to Montgomery Assistant Fire Chief Scott Graham.

But the blaze sent clouds of smoke billowing high into the air. They were visible for miles around.

The fire extended to a neighbors's home next door, officials said, apparently due to the radiant heat from the burning home. Shortly after 6 p.m., authorities reported that the fire was under control. The cause and origin of the blaze are under investigation.

Firefighters were first called at 4:42 p.m., and arrived to find the heavy fire on the first and second floors.

The fire erupted just blocks east of Wisconsin Avenue, a key roadway that was busy as the evening commute got underway. The sight of the smoke apparently affected traffic, officials said.
