Fort Washington man killed when SUV hits tree in Oxon Hill

A 27-year-old man was killed early Sunday morning when his vehicle hit a tree in Oxon Hill.

A Prince Georges County Police spokeswoman said authorities do not know what caused a vehicle driven by Jerry Garvis of Fort Washington to veer out of the northbound lane of Oxon Hill Road, across the southbound lane, and off the road. Garvis was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no passengers in the SUV that Garvis was driving, and no other cars were involved in the crash, which happened at around 3 a.m., police said. Police are investigating whether speed played a role in the crash.
