Frederick police officer shoots man who allegedly struck him with car

A 45-year-old Maryland man is facing several charges after he allegedly struck a police officer with his car and drove away Saturday night, leading other officers on a chase that ended in his arrest, authorities said Sunday.

Frederick police also are investigating an officer-related shooting in connection with the incident because the police officer who was hit by the car fired his gun at the driver, striking him.

Police said that around 11:21 p.m. Saturday, Frederick police stopped to investigate a suspicious situation in the 1200 block of West Patrick Street. An officer had exited his vehicle to investigate when Roy Turner, of Frederick, allegedly drove his vehicle into the officer. The officer then fired his gun at the driver, hitting Turner in the upper left arm. The suspect then fled the scene and was later stopped by other officers, police said.

Both the police officer and Turner were transported to hospitals for treatment. The officer suffered injuries to his back, hip and legs and has since been released. As is routine for officer-related injuries, he will remain at home on administrative leave until further notice, said Lt. Clark Pennington, a police spokesman.

“Imagine you’re a police officer in a car and you stop because you observe a suspicious situation,” Pennington said. “During the investigation the driver strikes the officer with the car and the officer fires into the vehicle because he feels his life is in danger and the driver flees the location.”

Turner was charged with a felony for possession of controlled substances and two motor vehicle violations, including attempting to elude police and failing to stop his vehicle at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury. He may face additional charges as the investigation continues, police said. Police said Turner would be transported to a detention center once he is released from the hospital. His injury was not life-threatening, police said.
