Free doughnuts to celebrate National Donut Day

The end of the work week just got a little sweeter: Today is National Donut Day, and Washington area doughnut shops are getting in on the action.

Dunkin’ Donuts, which has more than 30 locations in the region, will give out free doughnuts with the purchase of a beverage. Krispy Kreme is giving customers free doughnuts for just showing up — no purchase required.

According to National Donut Day organizers, the annual celebration of the sweet, deep-fried dough rings has been held on the first Friday of June since 1938.

The day was created by the Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.
