A girl was found dead Tuesday night in the Gaithersburg townhouse where she lived, and Montgomery County police said they were investigating the death as a homicide.

Officials did not immediately release the cause of her death, but said she was 12 years old.

Police were interviewing family members, friends and neighbors in an effort to determine what may have led to the death, Officer Rebecca Innocenti, a county police spokesman, said Wednesday morning. TV reports showed a white SUV being removed from the front of the townhouse.

“We are talking with multiple family members. . . . We are not narrowing our scope in any way,” said Captain Paul Starks of the Montgomery County police, late Tuesday night.

County and Gaithersburg police officers were called to a townhouse in the 700 block of Raven Avenue in the Hidden Creek development on a report of an injured child at about 7:35 p.m., Starks said. Once inside, police found the body.

Police did not know how long the body had been inside the home, Starks said. Authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy, which they hope will be finished Wednesday.

Anyone with information was urged to contact county police at 240-773-5070.
