A 17-month-old child died after his father left him in the back seat of a vehicle and went to work at Naval Air Station Patuxent River on Wednesday.
A Navy official said in a news release that the child was unresponsive when he was found about 3:30 p.m. Emergency responders performed CPR, but the boy was pronounced dead at 4:15.
The news release said the Naval Criminal Investigative Service was handling the case. An NCIS spokesman said Wednesday night that the investigation had indicated that the child was left in the car by his father, who works on the base. The spokesman said it was not clear how long the child was in the car or whether the father had forgotten he was there.

Prince George’s County police have identified the man who was found dead in Langley Park on Wednesday morning as 32-year-old Miguel Angel Barrillas.
Police found Barrillas lying in the street near the 8100 block of 15th Avenue after someone reported “a cutting,” authorities said. Barillas, who suffered trauma to his body, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Homicide detectives returned to the neighborhood Wednesday evening to canvass for information that would help them establish a suspect and motive.
“This is a senseless crime that we need the help of the community to solve,” said Capt. David Lloyd, an assistant commander in the police district that covers Langley Park. Lloyd spoke on the steps of Casa of Maryland, yards away from where Barillas’s body was found.
Officials with Casa of Maryland held a vigil in Barillas’s honor Wednesday evening and called for peace in the community.
“We are going to keep fighting for justice, we are going to keep fighting for dignity, and we are going to keep fighting against these horrendous crimes,” said Gustavo Torres, Casa’s executive director. In May, a 19-year-old was found stabbed to death in the woods nearby.
Torres said he remembered seeing Barillas on the steps of the Casa building, where he would use the free WiFi each morning to check for e-mails from his family.
Barilla was an immigrant from Guatemala and had a wife and two children, said Torres, who spoke on behalf of Barillas’s family.

Prince George’s County police are investigating the death of a woman found in a pool in Laurel.
Officer Nicole Hubbard said police received a call asking to check on the woman’s welfare about 2:35 p.m. Tuesday. They found the woman dead in a swimming pool in the 7900 block of Brooklyn Bridge Road.
Hubbard said the cause of death could not be determined, so police had not ruled out foul play.
She said the woman’s age was not known.
