Ever since Kodie Brown’s mother was fatally shot by the girl’s father in 2012, D.C. police officer Derrick Ferguson and his wife, RoShann, have been the child’s primary caregivers. It’s been a strain, emotionally and financially, but the couple tries to make happy memories at places near and far. Kodie, who was grazed by a bullet in the attack, needs several operations to remove more facial scar tissue, but benefactors have stepped up: A California clinic will do the procedures for free.
