With 4,160 votes, Clay Derderian’s Arlington bedroom was the readers’ choice winner of The Washington Post Kid’s Room Contest. Clay, 6, was given a diagnosis of brain cancer when he was 3 and recently lost his vision. His parents, Mary and James Derderian, have been making adjustments to the room to help Clay find his way around.
Clay and his mother, Mary Derderian, sit in his nautical-themed bedroom. The table is by Dwell Studio and originally had a yellow top, but Clay asked his mom to paint it the color of his stuffed octopus so that it matched the room's decor. The photo on the wall is from when Mary worked at National Geographic. John McDonnell/The Washington Post
