2 killed in car crash in Pr. George’s County

Maryland State Police said that two people were killed and one person was injured early Saturday morning in a single-car crash near the eastbound lanes of U.S. Route 50 at Interstate 295 in Cheverly. Police said they believed alcohol was a contributing factor.

The driver of a Chevrolet Camaro had been traveling north on Route 295 about 3:30 a.m. Saturday when he lost control of the vehicle and hit several trees, according to a preliminary investigation.

Two passengers were declared dead at the scene and the driver was taken to Prince George’s County Hospital for treatment, police said.

Candidate for House exits 8th District race

Satish Korpe, one of 10 Democrats vying for the party’s nomination to fill the congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. James P. Moran, dropped out of the race late Friday, a month before the primary election.

Korpe, an entrepreneur and director of the Democratic Business Council of Northern Virginia, announced his withdrawal on Twitter and on his Facebook page.

“I have evaluated the campaign and have come to the conclusion that there are some challenges that we cannot overcome in the next four weeks,” he wrote on Facebook.

He filed for the office too late to require reporting of any campaign donations to the Federal Elections Commission.

The 8th Congressional District covers Alexandria, Arlington County, Falls Church and parts of Fairfax County.
