State police sergeant killed in car crash

A 65-year-old Virginia State Police sergeant was killed in his patrol car early Saturday in a single-car crash, the state police said.

Sgt. J. Michael Phillippi died at a hospital in Martinsville after his unmarked car apparently ran off the right side of Route 57 in Henry County, the police said.

The sergeant, who had spent 42 years in the state police, was working as an overnight supervisor when the crash occurred.

Police said the car sustained only minimal damage, suggesting that it was not traveling fast when the crash occurred.

The crash was under investigation, police said.

Henry County is about 225 miles southwest of Washington, near the North Carolina border.
