A 75-year-old man was found dead in his Fairfax County home on Tuesday after police were called there for a report of a man who had been shot.

A Fairfax County police spokeswoman said police were on the scene late Tuesday night, investigating what she described as a suspicious death.

The man was identified as Gary P. Hanson of the 7600 block of Chancellor Way in the Springfield area of the county.

Police said officers were called to the house about 6 p.m.

Officer Shelley Broderick, a county police spokeswoman, said crime-scene detectives and homicide investigators remained on the scene after 10 p.m. Tuesday night. She said no information could be disclosed about the cause or circumstances of Hanson’s death.

It was not clear who telephoned police to report that he had been shot.

Public records indicated that Hanson apparently purchased his house on Chancellor Way more than 30 years ago. A neighbor described the curving street of single-family houses as a mixture of original residents, many of them retired, and newer arrivals.

The street is about two miles west of Interstate 95, a few miles northwest of Fort Belvoir, and near the Fairfax County Parkway.

As of late Tuesday, Broderick said, no arrest had been made in the death.
