A man was critically injured in a shooting that took place just before 7 a.m. Wednesday in Alexandria, police said.

According to police, the 35-year-old man was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital from the 5400 block of Holmes Run Parkway, where the shooting took place. He was listed in critical condition with wounds to the body, officials said. He was visiting his former home to pick up personal effects from his estranged wife who lives there, police said.

A 23-year-old male who was visiting the residence was treated on scene for a gunshot wound to the hand, police said. He was interviewed by detectives and then taken to Inova Alexandria Hospital for further treatment.

Police said that the investigation was ongoing. A pistol was recovered from the scene, according to officials.
