Man fatally shot in Alexandria condo building

A man was shot and killed Wednesday inside the stairwell of an Alexandria condominium building, Alexandria police said.

Police were called to the 400 block of North Armistead Street for the report of a shooting and found a victim with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body about 5:30 p.m., said Lt. Mark Bergin, a police spokesman. The victim was found inside a rear stairwell and was pronounced dead at the scene.

After police arrived, a man fainted at the scene and was taken to a hospital. A short while later, a fight broke out between groups of people, but police stopped the melee.

No one in the fight was injured or arrested, Bergin said. It was not immediately clear what caused the disturbance.
