Man killed in Hillcrest Heights identified as Cordell Brown

Authorities have identified the man fatally shot after police say he tried to rob two people in a car Sunday in the Hillcrest Heights area as 26-year-old Cordell Antonio Brown.

Police said Brown, of Southeast D.C., approached the two people in the car and pulled out a handgun in an apparent robbery attempt. A man inside the car, though, struggled for the gun, and Brown was shot, police said.

The incident occurred just after 12:30 a.m. in the 4400 block of 23rd Parkway.

Police did not identify the shooter and said no charges had been filed. They said the case was being probed as a “justifiable” homicide.
