Montgomery County Council member Phil Andrews has raised more than $100,000 in his underdog campaign for county executive, according to his new filing with the Maryland State Board of Elections.
Andrews (D-Rockville-Gaithersburg) reported contributions of $106,631 and a total of $117,978 cash on hand. The four-term council member is expected to be significantly outspent in the June Democratic primary by his two opponents, incumbent Isiah Leggett and former county executive Doug Duncan.
But Andrews, who does not accept contributions from real estate developers or labor unions, said he is satisfied with what he has been able to raise so far, mostly through “meet-and-greets” at private homes .
“I’m pleased,” he said. “I’ve raised over $100,000, all from individuals.”
Most of the contributions were small — in the $50 to $250 range — with a few exceptions. Andrews received $4,000 from John Bentivoglio, an attorney for Skadden, a D.C. law firm that represents pharmaceutical, medical device and biotech manufacturers in regulatory cases. He’s also a longtime Montgomery volunteer firefighter with the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad. Andrews has worked closely with volunteer firefighters a chairman of the council’s Public Safety Committee.
Andrews also received more than $6,000 from his family: parents Andrew and Margaret Levchenko, and brothers Keith Levchenko, a member of the County Council staff, and Stuart Levchenko, a tennis instructor in Redondo Beach, Ca.
“I think that’s a good sign,” Andrews quipped.
Finance reports from Duncan and Leggett, due Wednesday, have yet to be posted on the Board of Elections site.
