Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown (D) picked up endorsements Thursday for his 2014 gubernatorial bid from two predecessors of Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler, Brown’s chief party rival for governor.

Former Maryland attorneys general J. Joseph Curran Jr. and Stephen H. Sachs both said in statements that Brown is their preferred candidate to succeed Gov. Martin O’Malley (D).

“With a long record of serving Maryland’s hard-working families and delivering real results, Anthony Brown is by far the best candidate for governor in 2014, and I’ll be working hard to make sure he’s elected,” said Sachs, who served as attorney general from 1979 to 1987.

Curran, who served in the post from 1987 to 2007, when Gansler succeeded him, said that Brown would make “an exceptional governor.” Curran is also O’Malley’s father in law.

Both Curran and Sachs also praised Brown’s work on combatting domestic violence during his tenure as lieutenant governor. Gansler’s campaign has recently questioned Brown’s commitment to the issue.

Gansler spokesman Bob Wheelock referred to this latest support for Brown from fellow Democrats as “another note in the establishment machine endorsements” for O’Malley’s lieutenant governor.

“The people will vote, and this will be an election rather than a coronation,” Wheelock said.

He said the announcements by Curran and Sachs were not surprising. Brown used to work in a law firm under Sachs, Wheelock said.

And, he added, “I don’t think there’s any surprise here that Martin O’Malley’s father-in-law would support O’Malley’s hand-picked candidate.”

Del. Heather R. Mizeur (D-Montgomery) is also seeking the Democratic nomination for governor in the June primary.
