Md. gubernatorial hopeful Mizeur wins backing of group founded by Howard Dean

Maryland Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Heather R. Mizeur has picked up an endorsement from a national progressive group founded by Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor and presidential candidate.

Democracy for America, which claims more than 19,000 members in Maryland, says it will provide both a fundraising and volunteer boost for Mizeur, a Montgomery delegate, from across the nation. She is the first gubernatorial candidate endorsed this year by the group, which Dean launched a decade ago.

“Heather Mizeur won’t just make history as Maryland’s first woman governor and the first gay governor in American history,” said Charles Chamberlain, the group’s executive director. “She’ll make history as an unabashed progressive champion with the vision and leadership needed to get things done in Annapolis.”

The group cited Mizeur’s work on issues including raising the minimum wage and legalizing same-sex marriage as reasons for its endorsement.

In a statement, Mizeur said that she was excited to have the support of “the nation’s most progressive grassroots powerhouse.”

Mizeur faces two better-known and better-funded candidates in the June 24 Democratic primary: Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown and Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler.
