LGBT activists will stage an “educational picket” at the Fillmore Silver Spring on Monday evening to protest homophobic lyrics used by the Mexican rap-metal band Molotov, which is scheduled to perform.
“We’re going to be talking to fans and ask them to sign a petition to encourage Molotov not to use anti-gay phrases,” said Carrie Evans, executive director of Equality Maryland. Evans said there would be no attempt to encourage ticket holders to boycott the performance.
“We really want to just have a conversation with them as they go in to enjoy the concert and talk about why words matter and why some words are hurtful to the LGBT community,” she said.
The title of one of the band’s songs is a Spanish slur against gay men.
Last month, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett asked Live Nation, the concert promoting company that rents the building from the county, to cancel the booking. Live Nation officials declined, citing other U.S. performances, including a 2011 appearance at the 9:30 Club, that went ahead without protest.
