With six weeks until Primary Day and a month before the start of early voting, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett is rolling out the A-list endorsements. Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) and Sen. Ben Cardin (D) will formally declare their support for his reelection at a Potomac fundraiser Wednesday evening hosted by IT entrepreneur Frank Islam.
Leggett faces two opponents in the June 24 Democratic primary: former county executive Doug Duncan and County Council member Phil Andrews. Duncan ran against O’Malley in the 2006 Democratic gubernatorial primary, but dropped out of the race before the vote.
“Ike’s vision, forward-thinking and leadership have brought to Montgomery County core values…for all residents and a better future for our children,” O’Malley said in a statement released by the Leggett campaign Tuesday afternoon.
O’Malley and Cardin will be joined by Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md), who actually endorsed Leggett a few weeks ago, but will do an encore.
Leggett has been on an endorsement roll in recent days, picking up the Montgomery County Education Association (the teachers union), Service Employees International Union Local 500 (non-teaching support staff for Montgomery public schools and Montgomery College) and The Washington Post editorial board.
