Inclement weather may have kept the boats away, but it didn’t prevent a stunning fireworks display, St. Clements Island tours and other activities surrounding the 44th annual Blessing of the Fleet in Coltons Point.
Oct. 2, 2011 The 44th Annual Blessing of the Fleet took place on October 2nd in Coltons Point, Md., nd St. Clement's Island, the birthplace of Maryland. The first Maryland colonists arrived on the island in 1634. The Maryland ship Dove is seen through the window of a workboat that shuttled festival goers to the island. The Dove is a full-scale replica of a square-rigged merchant carrier used in the first half of the 17th century. She was named for the Dove, the smaller of the two ships that transported Lord Baltimore's New World expeditions to St. Mary's County in 1634. Sarah L. Voisin/The Washington Post Buy Photo
