Every first lady has had her own way of getting out of the White House. Michelle Obama, it seems, goes just about everywhere.
March 5, 2009 Obama tied on a purple apron and joined five volunteers on the serving line at Miriam’s Kitchen, where she spent about 15 minutes scooping risotto and chatting with the guests as they were called to the line for lunch. The nonprofit organization, which is eight blocks from the White House, experienced a bump in donations after the first lady’s visit. “There was one $500 donation that came from a donor in Texas who referenced Obama’s visit as the reason for the donation,” Miriam’s Kitchen President Scott Schenkelberg recalls.
