Pets removed from home after owner is hospitalized: Bloom Dr., 10300 block, Damascus, Jan. 9. Animal services and county police removed two miniature poodles and several birds from a home after a member of the Department of Health and Human Services reported that the pets’ owner had been hospitalized. The owner was not going be released soon, and no one was caring for his pets. The animals were taken to the shelter for care while the division attempted to locate a relative.

Owner fined for leaving hound mix out in the cold: W. Offutt Rd., 20400 block, Poolesville, Jan. 6. A black-and-tan hound mix had reportedly been tied outside for several days in the cold. When animal services arrived, they observed the dog tied in violation of the county’s tethering regulation. Even though a dog house was provided, it had no door flap and was not elevated, as required. In addition, the area where the dog was tied was muddy with standing water. Because no one was home to correct the situation, the dog was taken to the animal shelter. Upon claiming the pet, the owner was fined for improper shelter, improper tethering and improper space at $500 each. The officer was to monitor the situation.
