Montgomery County Police investigate fatal crash in Gaithersburg

Montgomery County police are investigating a Thursday morning crash in Gaithersburg that left one man dead and a woman seriously injured.

An SUV overturned about 1:30 a.m. on East Diamond Avenue after hitting a utility pole, a bus stop shelter, a tree, a fire hydrant and a pole support cable, according to police.

The incident happened after an officer tried to the stop the driver for failing to dim the vehicle’s high-beam headlights. The driver sped away from the officer, ran a red light and ran off the roadway, according to police.

Both occupants of the car were thrown from the vehicle.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
