The New Farmer Pilot Project was launched by Montgomery County to attract non-farmers to the county’s vast agricultural preserve. And after a year of toil, including a muddy spring and a one-for-the-almanacs winter, all four new farmers have survived to plant another crop.
June 6, 2014 Courtney Buchholtz, a former restaurant server, tends to the small farm she rents in Boyds, Md., as part of Montgomery County’s New Farmer Pilot Project. The county launched the program with the help of a $150,000 federal grant. The new farmers in the program come from a variety of backgrounds. For example, Keith Krause, a former MetLife blimp pilot, is starting his second season working a patch of land with his girlfriend, Joyce Piedrafita. Amanda Voisard/For the Washington Post Buy Photo
