Capital punishment

After my recent reverie over public transportation in the Netherlands, several readers complained that I erred when I wrote that the Hague was “the Dutch capital.”

The capital of the Netherlands, they insisted, is Amsterdam.

Oh, I suppose they’re right, if you’re willing to believe the spinmeisters at the Dutch Embassy. The smooth-talking diplomats over on Linnean Avenue NW pointed me to an official foreign office Web page which said, “Although Amsterdam is the Dutch capital, the government and States General (the Dutch parliament) are based in the Hague. The current head of state, Queen Beatrix, also lives in the Hague.”

All the foreign embassies are in the Hague, too.

Let’s see: government, politicians, embassies and monarch. What do you think the ingredients for a capital city are?
