A newborn baby was found dead in a Sterling, Va., pond over the weekend, and a search is on for her mother, authorities said.

According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, a person walking on a path along the pond, near Steed Place and Awsley Court, discovered the infant’s floating body around 11:42 a.m. Sunday.

The man-made pond is located in a residential neighborhood, surrounded by wooded cul-de-sacs lined with single-family homes.

The baby, a girl, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officials said they do not believe that the baby, who was naked when she was found, was born in a hospital. Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said the baby was only a few days old and may have been in the water for a couple of days.

Authorities are looking for the child’s mother, who they said is likely in need of medical attention. The mother is asked to call 703-777-1021 or go to the nearest hospital. Police were interviewing school resource officers and child protective services officials in an effort to fin the baby’s mother, who, authorities said, may be a teenager.

Anyone who has information about the mother’s identity, or saw anything suspicious in the area near Awsley Court, is asked to call 703-777-0475.
