The Rev. Eric L. David Sr., pastor of West Hyattsville Baptist Church since 2004, died Feb. 19 of cancer at Washington Hospital Center. He was 69.

A native of Liberia, Rev. David settled in the Washington area in about 1980, when he became assistant to the pastor at the District’s Second New St. Paul Baptist Church. He served at that church until 2001, when he started his own congregation, the Victory Baptist Fellowship in Prince George’s County.

Previously, he served as a pastor at Baptist churches in Tennessee and Liberia.

Eric Lafayette David Sr. was born in Robertsport, Liberia, and came to the United States as a student in the late 1960s.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the American Baptist Theological Seminary and a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University’s Divinity School in Nashville.

His marriages to Celestine McGill and Enid Hoff ended in divorce.

Survivors include his wife of one year, Connie Prevost David of Laurel; three children from his first marriage, Erica Cold of Dundalk, and Eursula David Sherman and Eureka Jackson, both of Frederick; two children from his second marriage, Eric L. David Jr. of Gaithersburg and Semuteh Rogers of Middletown, Del.; three sisters; two brothers; and 12 grandchildren.
