Frances Powell, 81, who taught music, kindergarten and first grade in Fairfax County public schools for many years, died April 20 at her home in Falls Church. She had leukemia.

Mrs. Powell began teaching in Fairfax in 1956 and retired from Wolftrap Elementary School in Vienna in 1988. She took a leave of absence to work as director of St. Christopher’s Day School in Springfield from 1967 to 1973.

Frances Miles Harper was a native of Danville, Va., and graduated from what is now Longwood University in Farmville, Va., in 1951.

She was a member of the Falls Church chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers and a former president of the Fairfax County Police Wives Club. She taught Sunday school and served as a deacon at Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church for nearly 50 years.

Her husband of 38 years, Phillip Powell, died in 1994.

Survivors include two daughters, Laurie Rafferty of Annandale and Virginia Struyk of Gainesville; a sister; and four grandchildren.
