Kathleen “Kathy” Hefferly, who grew up in Montgomery County and worked for more than two decades at restaurants in Hoover, Ala., died May 7 at Sanctuary at Holy Cross in Burtonsville. She was 52 and had Alzheimer’s disease.

Kathleen Anne Hefferly, who had Down syndrome, was born in Washington. She grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Rock Terrace School in Rockville.

After moving with her family to Birmingham, Ala., in 1974, Ms. Hefferly attended the Chauncey Sparks Center for Developmental and Learning Disorders at the University of Alabama.

She competed in the Special Olympics throughout her life.

Survivors include her mother, Mary A. Hefferly of Potomac; two brothers, Mark Hefferly of The Woodlands, Texas, and David Hefferly of Charlotte; and four sisters, Deborah Biesenbach of Potomac, Donna Fleming of Columbus, Ga., Michele Tennery of Arlington County and Mara Fabian of Denver.
