Haven E. Simmons, a retired lawyer who lived for many years in Ellicott City, died May 15 at his home. He was 89.

He had liver cancer, his son Nicholas Simmons said.

Mr. Simmons practiced law in the Washington area during the early 1950s before he moved to a firm in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He specialized in patent, trademark and copyright law. He returned to the Washington area in 1989 after he retired.

Haven Ely Simmons was born in St. Louis and grew up in Cedar Rapids. He was a 1947 graduate of St. John’s College in Annapolis and a 1951 graduate of Harvard Law School. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Sarah Prescott Simmons of Ellicott City; two sons, Haven Simmons of Salisbury and Nicholas Simmons of Frederick; two brothers, William Simmons of Severna Park and John Simmons of Albuquerque; and a granddaughter.
