Carolyn Jones, 77, a Northern Virginia certified public accountant who retired in 2003 from the public accounting firm of Margitta L. Muhlenberg in McLean, died Nov. 3 of progressive supranuclear palsy at her home in Oakton.

The death was confirmed by her daughter, Juliet Jones.

Carolyn Cottrell was a native of Trenton, N.J., and a 1957 graduate of what is now Denison University in Ohio. She settled in the Washington area in 1974 and, in 1981, received a master’s degree in accounting from Georgetown University.

Mrs. Jones was a certified public accountant in the 1980s with Charles Cocke and Co. in Reston and Murphy and Smithers of Fairfax. In the 1990s, she joined the Muhlenberg firm.

She was a volunteer literacy tutor.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Howard P. Jones of Oakton; and two children, Michael P. Jones of Chantilly and Juliet L. Jones of Oakton.
